The streets are filled with sages 满街都是圣人
Quanzhou, Fujian Province, is known as a city “protected by the gods” (aka China’s most “blessed” city) throughout history. The scholar Zhu Xi once wrote: “This place was once called the Buddhist Kingdom; saints fill its streets.” From Kaiyuan Temple to Qingjing Mosque, Quanzhou’s streets are always alive with incense smoke and the scent of agarwood in the air.
Though not a large city, Quanzhou is home to over 6,000 temples. This unique “city of gods” atmosphere comes from its special natural environment, historical significance, and rich cultural diversity. Here, it feels like you might meet a “deity” at any corner, not only through its many temples but also in the masterful craftsmanship of its buildings.
In southern Fujian, the land is mountainous and hilly, so many locals turned to the sea. This “land in the sea” shaped the deep-rooted Minnan culture. In Quanzhou, almost everyone believes in Mazu, the beloved sea goddess, often seen as the brightest “star” in local hearts. Quanzhou’s Tianhou Temple is a major site for Mazu worship and one of the world’s key centers for spreading her belief.
For generations, people have stopped here before setting sail again, countless boats and ships carrying Mazu’s spirit from Quanzhou to distant shores.

Why are young people no longer getting married? 年轻人为何都不结婚了
Why are young people no longer getting married? It’s not that they don’t want to, but it’s that they can’t afford to.”
According to joint research by China’s Ministry of Civil Affairs and the Chinese Academy of Social Sciences, as of 2024, the average cost of getting married in rural areas has risen to around 330,400 yuan (about $45,000).
If a young person in the countryside earns 4,000 yuan per month, it would take about 7 years of working non-stop with zero spending just to cover marriage costs. This is well beyond the international marriage cost-to-income warning level.
And marriage in the city isn’t much easier. A major survey shows that over 70% of young urban adults say buying an apartment is the biggest obstacle to marriage.
According to Beike Research Institute’s 2024 first-quarter data, the average price for a new apartment in downtown Zhengzhou is 15,260 yuan per square meter. A 90-square-meter wedding home would cost about 1.37 million yuan.
According to Zhengzhou’s official data, in 2023 the average urban salary was 96,288 yuan per year, or roughly 8,024 yuan per month.
